Thank you! I couldn't remember the term for it. Additional space is shot around what's actually shown in the theater. That's not to say that a director sits there and says 'ok, we really need x amount of extra space just to make sure everything looks good on HBO!' But there is extra 'stuff' captured on the film. It is that version that generally ends up on premium channels like HBO.

Movie purists detest this because they believe it violates the vision of the director. In some cases, that's inarguably true - mood is set, e.g., by use of cropping. But for alot of what comes out of Hollywood these days, changing what you see really detracts nothing from the movie. The point remains, though - lack of black bars does NOT automatically mean that the movie has been cropped!
